Hello from your latest recruit, a hitherto dyed-in-the-wool Windoze practitioner of many years standing. I finally got fed up with looking over my shoulder in fear of trojans, viruses, keyloggers and rootkits, and the last straw was when a few of the above defeated Kaspersky and took up residence...
I didn't even bother trying to eradicate them, I simply formatted the hd and installed Ubuntu. Which leads me to my question.
Ubuntu installed easily, but apparently there is a bug in the program which buggers up (that's why it's called a bug, right?) the installation of the Grub boot loader. After a long and interesting exploration of the myriad solutions via Google, I decided to simply download Grub and install it, thereby making the acquaintance of ftp'ing and tarring.
I have ended up with Grub on a USB stick ready for installation.
I know that this is an elementary operation, but would some of you kind ladies or gentlemen please tell me how to do this, or give me a pointer to the relevant information on your website?
What version of linux are you using? I got part when you stated your using ubuntu, but what version, 8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10, 10.4, 10.10?
I ask this because form 9.04 and up they use grub2 and that's different.
You state that there's a bug in grub, we need more information, what is giving you the idea that there's a bug, is the system not booting, is the grub menu not displaying?
Grub would have been installed by default during your original install. So installing manually would be unnecessary. If you must see this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 or google search: how to install grub, grub reinstall, recover grub, with your Linux distro at the end. example: recover grub ubuntu, recover grub ubuntu 10.04.
Given that most of the help you'll be seeking out, will be form submissions, and the like, we all ask that you be unambiguous and do try to give as much information as you can, even detailing the situation helps us help you..
good luck.

@OP
When you installed ubuntu, did you specify where you want to install grub? By default, it installs to hd0, so if you have multiple drives in your setup, this could cause an issue.
Could you post some details about how many hard drives you have, which partitions ahve what on them, and what exactly the problem is, ie: not booting, not showing grub, failing to find kernel, etc.
In Ubuntu 9.10 and up, GRUB legacy has been replaced with GRUB 2. GRUB 2 is fundamentally different from GRUB legacy in all respects. That's for starters.
Secondly, during installation you need to specify where to install GRUB. It defaults to /dev/sda, but if you have multiple hard drives and want to install, say, on /dev/sdb, then installing the boot loader on /dev/sda while your system is on /dev/sdb you will have problems.
Try reinstalling and this time specifying where to install GRUB. You'd be glad you did.
