How to install 'buntu without downloading language packs?

I have noticed this in Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Mint so I guess it may have a generic solution. During the install process the installer downloads about 47 bigabytes of "language packs". I really need only English on the machine. Is there a way to turn off the language pack download/install? It seems like a waste of bandwidth and my netbook for example has only a 16 GB SSD drive (which is more that the first dozen or 20 hard drives I have owned but that is another story).

TIA,

Ken

Try de-selecting the 'Download updates during install' (or something similar) option from the install setup.

Thanks towheedm. On Ubuntu at least I had that unchecked. The language packs downloaded regardless.

Distros like Ubuntu are intended to work "out of the box" for everyone---even if they don't have a full-time internet connection. (or maybe they just have a slow modem)
But wait, you said the installer is doing the download---are you doing a net install?

No, I am not doing a net install. I downloaded the Ubuntu 12.04 iso and loaded it to a usb flash drive with the startup disk creator utility in Ubuntu 10.04. With Mint 13 I had to burn to a DVD as the machine would not boot from the flash drive.

I guess I need to do the install with the network connection unplugged. I dare it to download the language packs then

Well I did an install w/o network. When I ran the software update after completing the install the darned thing installed the language packs. On another install I checked [X] ... updates while installing choice. It did NOT install the updates. I filed a bug on that one. I guess the language packs are required but the left them off the install CD to save space.

Are you sure it is 47 GIGABYTES of language packs??? Even if you meant to say 4.7GB, this is still something that I have never experienced since my first install of the inaugural Ubuntu 4.10. I also use only English.
My Ubuntu installs have never been larger than about 6GB; and this was with all of Gnome and all of XFCE installed. With only one DE my *buntus are always less than 4GB after an install.

bigabytes I did not really quantify. Just a bit annoying as I have been doing many installs trying to find a distro I like.
