how to init from text mode in Ubuntu 9.10?

I am willing to boot up in a text mode, and then start X windows when I want to.

I found the procedure Ubuntu used is different from other distribution.
Would some one give me some hint?

Except the newer 'buntus use upstart. ( init 1 in a root VT freezes my system completely ).

There's an explanation here

Edit: Here's an in-depth link to how ubuntu uses upstart.

you can still start your display manager ( xwindows ) based on runlevel. the upstart stripts are stored in /etc/init. if your take a look in the files in /etc/init you should see some examples of sevices started based on runlevel such as /etc/init/anacron.conf.
