The most common reason why Ubuntu desktop might run slowly is that you aren't using the best drivers for your graphics card. Your other thread (about how your screen is upside down) also suggests a problem with your graphics drivers. What kind of graphics do you have? If you don't know, you can find out with:

Code:
lspci | grep VGA

This is Baytrail device btw, and Linuxium version of Ubuntu is installed..

I'm sorry, I thought you were asking about Ubuntu. I'm afraid I have never heard of "Linuxium" and am not knowledgeable enough to answer questions on that topic. Best of luck!

On a related note, personally I wouldn't try to run Ubuntu with Unity/Gnome3 desktop on an Atom processor. Ubuntu is really intended for powerful modern computers with strong graphics cards. The minimum Ubuntu hardware requirements are described on this page: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Perhaps Xubuntu (lightweight Xfce desktop) or Lubuntu (lightweight LXDE desktop) would be a better fit for your Atom-based computer?

Code:
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
or

Code:
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
(You can select the newly-installed desktop environment, Xfce or LXDE, from the login screen.)

Well, this is Ubuntu but there's some modifications made to the kernel.

I tried both, Xubuntu and Lubuntu, but those had a poor HiDPI support. Screen resolution is 2048x1536. CPU is not atom, it's Intel® Bay Trail-T Quad Core Z3735 1.33 GHz.
