How to create an image of a partitioned disk

Hi:
My Ubuntu 12.04 system is on a hard drive with two partitions; one for the /home folder and the other for the rest(/). I want to know if there is an application that can create and image file for the whole disk (partitions and data), so that I could be able to restore the whole system either on the same disk or on a new empty disk. On a new disk the program should be able to create the partitions and restore the data. Thanks for the help.

Have a look at mondorescue - gives you the option to resize and/or reallocate the partitions at rebuild if you desire. Also change filesystem type.
I write to iso's and burn to disk later - makes it a bit faster.

http://clonezilla.org/

Read the documentation on the different options, cloning a partition, cloning an entire drive before you begin.

The information you gave me about clonezilla, I think, answers my needs. What is left is to try it out! Thanks.
