How to connect dial up

I have installed a modem that supposed to work but it dosnt seem to connect. How do I connect. I went through the set up and clicked activate, and deactivate was grayed out thus telling me that the modem was in fact activated.

Is activate the same thing as connecting? This is confusing because I dont see any promt to connect. The word I'm looking for is "Connect". Or is "Activate" the the same as "Connect". Because my modem does nothing migh also tell me that it's not compatible with this system, or it is broke because it is real, real, old.

Wouldn't deactivate being grayed out suggest that, in fact, it was not activated? I.e. you can't deactivate something that is not activated, so they would gray the box out. Just a thought ...

I have not used Ubuntu, but this link suggests it is:

There was an "activate" button and after clicking on it the system was getting connected to internet by running pppd.
Although it goes on to say that the button has been replaced by a checkbox in Ubuntu Edgy.

If your distro comes with minicom, I would suggest using it to try to talk to the modem manually. I would also suggest you first read minicom's man page; You need to first set it up by running minicom -s as root. Then you can run it as a normal user. This will let you determine whether you can actually talk to the modem, and if not, give you an opportunity to troubleshoot the situation without added complications. If/when you can talk to the modem with minicom, if things still don't work, you can focus on higher level issues.

When you get minicom set up and pointing at the modem, start it. After it does some initialization, it should print:

OK

If you then type

ATZ

is should give you another "OK."

Activating your modem may only identify it as the network interface of choice. If there was a properties button on that display it should help you set additional parameters like DCHP, ISP, user and password.
