No still problems the root screen does not work correctly and many apps do not run.
Anyone know if you can run with root in Ubuntu or have they completely messed the root screen up.
Don't come back and tell me not to use it unless you can explain how you load your apache website with files, run Quanta and edit files without being in a root gui screen.
Anyone, know how to properly log in as root the question is only for Ubuntu users please.
(which of course you already know about) then type
Code:
sudo visudo
and comment out
Code:
# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL
(actually all this does is turn off sudo...not really sure if it is required, but this is one of the steps I took). Reboot, and load the RECOVERY option, login your root account, then startx and you will be in the gui as root (you probably don't have to start in recovery mode), I have not really messed with it much because I actually enjoy the sudo command. Alternatively you can make a Sudo Launcher on your desktop where all you have to do is Drag & Drop files or folders onto the launcher and it opens in sudo. Create a new launcher on your desktop (right-click desktop, new Launcher) put whatever you wish as the description, icon, and comments, but in the Command area type in
Code:
gksudo "gnome-open %u"
and you have a Drag & Drop sudo launcher, you can also make one on your taskbar if you do not wish to have anything on your desktop. Hope all of this helps good luck.
Actually...I just found out all you have to do is goto System -> Administration -> Login Window then click on the security tab and check Allow local system administrator login. Also check out this guide it has alot of info here
well for future reference - this is probably the wrong way to go about things but appears to work
sudo init 1
then give the root password
then startx
which brings you neatly back to the gui as root
but i would have to agree with the other people that you really dont need root gui to setup a LAMP server. i have done several now and all i ever do is use su, because that does everything i need anyway.
A decade later this is still relevant. Every other resource I could find said there was no su access on Ubuntu, but this worked like a charm. Thank you

Actually I did see the page, but upon closer inspection I didn't look far enough down. Some good stuff down there ;-) Thank you for making me look again.
