how do I switch runlevels?

"init x" doesn't work.

I guess they disabled it, so...

The command is startx which is actually a front-end for xinit.
To change the runlevel, edit /etc/inittab or at least this is what we do on Slackware

Code:
#/etc/init.d/gdm stop
replace gdm wtih kdm or xdm if thats what you use.
To get back into X, do
Code:
#/etc/init.d/gdm start
Debian runs everything in runlevel 2, so doing things like "init 3" does not work.

you can man runlevel for more info but to change from runlevel to to runlevel 3 type:
init 3

same to go from runlevel 3 to 5 simply type:
init 5

typing init 0 will shut down the system.

.....nevermind. I didn't know debian does not work with init commands. sorry.
