How do I make openal work with php on ubuntu server 9.04?

Hi, I'm having trouble getting openal to work with php. So far I've done the following:

Installed openal
Put openal.so in /usr/lib/php5/20060613/
Edited php.ini , and added the line "extension=openal.so"

When I run this script

<?php
$device = openal_device_open();
?>

I get the following error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function openal_device_open()

I don't understand why the function is undefined, if I've put the extension=openal.so entry in php.ini...

Can anyone help?

Cheers!
