How do I keep all kernel updates

I'm currently upgrading Kubuntu Breezy to Feisty on dialup. Not a bunch of fun, but I'm used to it. 928 upgraded packages, 293 new ones. 691MB of archives. nearly a full cdrom.

Anyway, that's not the problem. With my Debian installs I can keep all of my kernels. On Fedora using apt, I likewise can keep all the kernels, although Yum with Fedora by default only keeps 2 kernels, but you can change that by disabling the installonlyn plugin.

has anyone any suggestions how I can keep all of my kernels with Kubuntu?

This way, I can decide when I want to remove a kernel, rather than an upgrade deciding that the oldest kernel is going to be deleted, whether I like this or not.

I'm asking this now as my transition from Breezy to Feisty has downloaded a 2.6.20 kernel (not yet installed), and I want to retain the Breezy kernels, and also the 2.6.20 one.

Any suggestions anyone?

Much appreciation as usual for any help.

Nigel. aka farpoint.

It's not just the kernel - what about (kernel) modules. Not to mention the fairly significant change to libata (disk naming) you'll cross over. That (probably) caused the change to UUID in fstab in Feisty.
Trying to do what you want could (will) get seriously ugly.

Seems to be contrary to the Ubuntu ethos - generally if I don't like the way a distro does things I just move on to another.

Well I'm mainly concerned with finding a way to keep more than 2 kernels.I want to have all kernel updates available in /boot. Where is it configured that only 2 kernels should be retained with Kubuntu? There is an /etc/apt/apt.conf.d, but that only has a couple of files.

One of the files is "05aptitude", which has one line, as below.
aptitude:elete-Unused-Pattern "^Linux-image.*$";

Has that file anything to do with the number of kernels retained? If so, what changes do I need to make to this file. Just comment the line out?

I may be jumping a release here in upgrading Breezy to Feisty, but was just getting 404's when trying to get updates for Breezy, and presumed it was no longer supported. The only other release I could remember was Feisty, so just changed my /etc/apt/sources.list so that it pointed to Feisty. I have dealt with libata in the kernel with Fedora 7, and am not too happy with it as I run a lot of distro's on this machine, and it has initially been confusing having my PATA drives described as SATA ones. Never mind, that's progress I suppose.

Any fixes so I can save all kernel updates welcome.
