how do I enable dual monitor support for Feisty on an ATI Radeon 900

thread name should reference an ATI Radeon 9000 not 900

ok to start with here is my hardware

Dell Latitude D600
P-M 1400 MHz
512MB Ram
ATI Radeon 9000 FireGL (Rev 2)
XGA Display (1024x768 max Display)
Gateway EV910 19" CRT

When I boot into Kubuntu I can only get Mirrored display onto my external monitor
I cannot seem to find a way to get dual-head working the way that I want with an extended desktop
I would like to have 1600x1200 on the Gateway monitor and 1024x768 on the laptop display

I am using the built in ATI driver that works out of the box with Kubuntu (even 3d support)
ATI has discontinued support for this card and the last driver they released that would work with it is 8.28.8 but this version does not work with Xorg 7.2

so basically I would like help with setting this up (if possible I would like the 19" to be the main display and have an easy way to switch between this setup and just using the laptop display
all tutorials I have found are for new cards and the fglrx driver from ATI which is not an option for me

I've been trying to get this to work for a week but have had no luck
since dual display is something that I use regularly it's been a bit of a hassle
soo much so that I'm in my WinXP patition to writing this cause I'm working on sever things at once here and being able to see everything while I'm writing this helps speed up the process
