How can I use a dial up serial modem with Ubuntu 12.04?

I have looked but I can not find any way to configure an external dial up serial modem within Ubuntu 12.04. Can someone please help me with this hurdle? Thanks!

It's been a while since I used them but can't you use wvdial/ppp? Sorry not to be more specific but I haven't had a land line in years.

You have to know more about this device. There are two basic types of modems. One is a real hardware device and the other is a software controlled device. The next issue is the way it connects to the host.

If you've used the modem under an earlier version, you need to install the wvdial and ppp packages via the Software Center. Canonical dropped them from the 12.04 CD since very few machines sold recently include dial-up modems.

If you haven't used the modem before, it may well be a "Winmodem" that requires a software driver, and the manufacturers only provide Windows drivers for them. However, Conexant has a driver available that may work with it under Linux. I never could get mine to work, but I see reports of satisfactory results from other folk...

The first thing is to determine what kind of modem you have. Most software/winmodems won't work with linux and if you have one of these then you will be better off getting what they call a hardware modem that will work on linux. Post the results of
Code:
lspci
and/or
Code:
lsusb
to help tell what kind of modem you have. There is a modem scan tool on this web site that might also help to determine what kind of modem you have. http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/ . Once you know what kind of modem you have you still might have to load the drivers for the modem. Loading the driver for the modem will vary depending on what kind of modem it is.

A standard install of Ubuntu comes with the tools to use dial-up if wvdial isn't installed. Here is link to how to set up dialup http://www.ubuntugeek.com/setting-up...in-ubuntu.html

A friend mailed me a CD containing the 4 wv and 2 gnome-ppp files that I needed to install into ubuntu 12.04
However 12.04 makes a dial up user to only enable a dial up serial modem through the terminal. Only one phone number is allowed.

The " software manager " will not download anything so I was forced to install synaptic.
My problem now is to find a way to make the floppy drive work.
