Here's a new one...
Everytime I go to Softpedia, browsing for the latest Linux stuff to try.
There is a preview for Ubuntu 8.04, alpha version, using Firefox, the system locks up on me. I have not tried the other browser versions yet. My system always locks up when it is trying to do a make, make install, I put the server edition on, 7.04, and decided that it would be nice to have the GUI part, it locks up during installation, I do the dpkg --configure -a thingy, but it just reverts back to the error screen. Ok, so then I install the Desktop version, and try to add the server components after it appears to be stable, same thing, lock up. Was trying to set up a LAMP server. |

For the Softpedia link to Ubuntu 8.04 Alpha , it would appear to be a Firefox Problem. All the links work well with Ephinay.

Can you give me an example of an Alternate Version Kernal?
I do think that it is truly a Hardware problem, I had some parts left over from a couple of computers, re-built a new one, so that it is dedicated Linux Box. When I have to re-install, it usually takes me a few times before the installation is finalized. Even funnier than that, I usually have to put BackTrack 2 on it on first, before it will accept any other distro for installation. It is comprised of the following hardware. AMD ATHELON 2000+ A7V133/A7V133-C Mainboard SB Live 5.1 Sound Card lOGITECH MARBLE MOUSE Compaq standard 102/102 Keyboard 768 MB SDRAM G-Force MX 200/400 Video Card (Nvidia) ADM Fasttek ethernet 10/100 Card Connors 80 GB HDD Logitech Webcam 3.5 Floppy CDROM / DVD ROM LG 8036 Daytek 19 " monitor Well that's it for Hardware I really would like to learn how to set up a server. Always had an interest in these things. I used Apache when it first came out in the late 90's, now wish to expore it more, now that the technology is better and easier to use. |

Yes,
You are right, I have been lucky. I have also learned to stay away from most of the KDE stuff as well, that seemed to bugger my system a lot. So now I keep it simple, and as long has it is functioning decently, I do not complain. I seem to have the gift of patience, trouble shooting and foresight to know what to try and what not to try. I have checked HCL, etc, and OS's for example, but yet been able to get non-compatible hardware to work together. My biggest tech problem, was achieved with getting a Connors and Western Digital HDD to work as Primary Master Slave combo. It would be nice to have a Linux OS installation program, like Anaconda to recognize that there is another Linux OS on the HDD,and give you the option of removing it or setting up a dual boot system. So for the last 3 years I have dabbled in Linux, explored, liked it very much, and made my own discoveries and achieved goals for installation. Now if I can only get Linux XP Desktop to install completely, I 'll be 1 more step ahead. Lately it seems that Fonts are the problem, and now it is development package for building Kernal modules to match the Kernal, causes the installation to lock up. Thanks for your help by the way. jymmi |
