Help Needed to Install Canon PIXMA MP130 Inkjet Printer to Ubuntu 8.10
 

Hello to All...I am "LGP" and I am new to Linux, I installed the Ubuntu 8.10 but cannot install Canon PIXMA MP130 InkJet Printer. I have a Dell GX-400 P4, 1GB RAM, and I have searched in Canon USA, Asia and Europe for the Driver in Linux without success. Finally I read about Open source Drivers (CUPS - Gutenprint), but I don't understand quite well the how to in Linux.

I need help urgently, will appreciate any help; Thank you...

First of all, let me thank you for taking your time to search and sharing with me. Your findings did help. I finally installed my Canon printer, and it's working fine, although it only prints in black and grayscales...Better than nothing. I will search to see how to have colours.

You know Phin666, I had bounced up with that mambo.kuhp.kyoto...site, but I never realized that the instructions had to be plug by shell, terminal or whatever Linux calls it. And just to illustrate the Community, I also learned that Ubuntu does not come with the tools required to install pkgs..you need to install the pkg build-essential for making the pkg and checkinstall and so it can be placed into the pkg mgr. This tip is berried in the Community Ubuntu Documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompilingEasyHowTo) page 1/5. Now I understand why when consulting with friends of mines that are Computer Specs, they always avoid the theme...The system, Linux, is great for free, but learning curve is very steep. Gosh, I have read like a deamon this last month, and I'am just begining...

The usual way of installing software into *bunutu is via a package manager like synaptic. It is only if the distro doesn't provide packages pre-built in its repositories (and you may have to enable extra repos, because, by default, it can be a pretty minimal set that is enabled) that you need to compile from source.

So, while I agree that its an oversight, most new users shouldn't be hit by it, as they should be using a package manager; the more experienced will already have a good idea of the solution.
