Help needed installing Ubuntu on multiple systems

Hi! I am a newbie to Linux...

I run a computer shop here in Marysville, CA. We are getting sick and tired of paying $79-$99 for every WINDOWS XP that we install on our used computers. The Windows is worth more than the computer in some cases.

So we (my son and I) are taking the plunge and installing Linux (ubuntu) on a couple of our systems.
We hope to eventually convert ALL OF OUR USED COMPUTERS TO LINUX. We have tried to do so for a couple of years, but we have given up each time because we are also a virtual INTERNET company and internal winmodems are hard to install on Linux systems. Since every computer that we refurbish must have a modem we have shyed away from Linux.

So again we try to enter the Linux world as a commercial adventure...still we get whacked down with poorly written Linux tutorials and Linux manuals. We just spent $250 on Linux books, LINUX FOR DUMMIES and the LINUX BIBLE, and a couple of others. I am as confused now as I was prior to my expediture of money.

So, our lonely LINUX systems sit unused... I installed ubuntu on one computer in my house, and other one in the shop...both just glaring at me unwilling to do what I request of them! I am currently trying to get POSTFIX to unarchive but I get error message after error message.

This sounds more like a venting and frustration. What's the actual question and problem?

Your topic thread says you would like to install Ubuntu on multiple systems. Why do you mean by this? ARe the systems the same? You could mirror the drive and place the image on each computer. Or, do a network install and point the installation to the installation server.

It sounds like you have some slow connections to start with (winmodems?)

I would dump those and go ethernet. I have NEVER had a problem connecting with my rhine ethernet or my wireless.

That's understandable.

So you're refurbishing used notebooks, some of them really old.

As randell6564 mentioned, using modems ain't really necessary nowadays. You don't need to offer that to your clients. Just get rid of that idea.
It might be a better idea to become a reseller for a DSL company, and to offer your clients a reasonably-priced DSL connection as an advantageaous add-on.
(Just a marketing idea...)

Apart from that, in the meantime, there'd be some single drivers that actually support WinModems on Linux. But I really wouldn't go for that, especially not with the broad variety of hardware you probably need to serve!

So go for DSL. - Also, none of your clients would even notice they had a WinModem on board, and even if one did, you'd never signed a contract to support it. That's not a piece of hardware being supported by that conditions.

Ah, come on, you're mixing issues. - Post exactly what your doing, and the exact error messages, or do not post about another issue in one sentence please.

--------
BTW, in order to comfort you, I'm getting "error message after error message", too - but in another computer-related field. - Someday this will stop. - That will be the Lord's day! Hopefully

Anyways, I wish you good luck, and a good rational background with any of your decisions.
As by adding-on a contract for a DSL line (earning some extra $), and sparing the costs for Windows, you could even have a much better position than before!

Thanks
