Ok, Just tried to install network-manager-gnome
"error: Dependancy is not satisfiable:libnm-util0" Does this mean I must find the file libnm-util0 and install it? |
Hi,
I'm a rookie at this stuff but, could you get a copy of Knoppix and try it to see if that OS will hook up to your wireless? What got me started was that I'd tried two different Linux systems and got disgusted with their inability to go on the Internet. Then for kicks, I run the "live" boot Knoppix and Wham!, no programming, no configuaration (in fact, at the time, MS was fouled up and wouldn't go on-line without the wireless card CD run to load drivers). Point is, if Knoppix will work, couldn't you check the settings information on it and set your OS to the same thing? They're both Debian-based which is why I tried Unbuntu (which also worked "out of the box") on my hard drive. If this approach won't work, I hope one of the experts out there why tell me why. I think getting on line is (or configuring for it) is one of the things that turns off new users since you can't access all these great forums to aid you. Best of Luck (and talent). |
I think I may have found the problem
Error: Network Manager cannot be installed on your computer type (i386) Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type I have a Dell Latitute D610 Does anyone know is this computer is not supported and what I should do? Thanks |
I recommend you remove gnome-network-manager and disable nm-applet, if still present, in System-> Preferences-> Sessions-> Startup Programs tab. With Synaptic install wifi-radar which IMHO is a better solution anyway.

The only things in sessions are:
update-notifier /usr/lib/evolution/2.8/evolution-alarm-notify gnome-power-manager gnome-volume-manager --sm-disable Fargos Any other ideas? Do you have time to converse with me through IM and help me troubleshoot. I'm going on day three here with this and becoming a bit desperate |
Hi, I don't know if this will help or not, but I did find a .deb for wifi radar. The problem is that I don't know if it will solve your problem. But it certainly won't hurt. Here is the link.

ok got it to work, and this was how:
I downloaded the following files in my windows partition and moved them to my ubuntu edgy partition:
dhcdbd_1.14-2ubuntu2_i386.deb libnl1-pre6_1.0~pre5+svn21-2ubuntu2_i386.deb ibnm-util0_0.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb network-manager_0.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb network-manager-gnome_0.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb I also had to download various libraries that these .deb files were dependent on. It was a pain and took a while but now I'm on the internet and finishing the install of edgy. to Budword, Fragos, MunkeeWrench Thank you so much for all the help, you guys have great. In the US I've only seen PPPOE used with DSL connections. I don't know where you are but question your using it with wireless.

I live in the U.S. and I have a DSL connection. The modem is hooked up to a wireless router in my home.
But the problem has been fixed if you read my previous post. Thanks again for being so helpful. |
