Question .gvfs file

1) what exactly is the purpose of .gvfs file in the home directory.
I use Ubuntu 8.04



celsius@celsius-desktop:~$ sudo find / -name .exrc
find: /home/celsius/.gvfs: Permission denied
celsius@celsius-desktop:~$ sudo cat .gvfs
cat: .gvfs: Permission denied

The file '.gvfs ' is a directory, probably meant for
some gvfs config files ?? (empty on my 8.04)
