Gutsy freeze during shutdown while disabling eth#

I have three NICs on my computer. Whenever I go to shutdown/reboot, Ubuntu 7.10 *always* hangs up while it's turning those off.

I always end up hitting my reset button. Is this eventually going to cause damage to my system or the data on the harddrive if I keep having to do this? Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks. I checked google and did a thread search, but no one seemed to have this error that I could see.
