GUI tools for dual monitors in 6.06 make me want to burn things

Relevant hardwware:
AGP Geforce 6200 (detected as a 6800, huh?):
VGA port: Gateway VX700 CRT
DVI port: empty

Trident TGUI9440:
VGA port: HP Pavilion MX70 CRT

I've been wrestling with this for hours now. When I go into Display in System Settings and set the GW monitor as Primary and the HP as secondary. After applying the changes, it prompts me to log out and restart the X server. Now I sitll have a blinking cursor on the HP and the resolution on the GW is doubled and I have to move the cursor around to scroll the zoomed in view of the screen. So I go into the Hardware display settings again and what's this? The HP monitor has been reverted to "Unused" and the empty DVI port is set to Seconadry? Same result when setting the HP as primary and the GW as secondary, the secondary is reverted to the empty DVI port upon restart of X. Setting it to Clone primary screen or dual screen makes no difference, same result. All I want to do is have the HP monitor for AIM and such while playing fullscreen games on the GW or extra screen space for things like Audacity. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? I've gotten down to the "God hates me" conclusion... again.

Here's my ubuntu-mangled xorg.conf if you can wade through it. At this point I'd rather do it by hand but this thing is just too ugly to tell what I'm doing:

Code:

Oh, and before anyone mentions a DVI-VGA adapter for the 6200 and pulling the PCI card altogether, that was my original plan. Turns out my only DVI-VGA adapters have DVI-I connectors, where the 6200 has a DVI-D port (plug won't fit, extra pins).

Try the file below it should give you two separate screens at 1024x768 if you want/need higher resolutions then put them at the start of the Mode line, I cleaned out the junk that was in the file and made it sensiblely named you may want to change the LeftOf to RightOf depending on how the second monitor is located on your desktop.

That's a start. Still a blinking cursor on the HP monitor, but the GW is usable in the meantime. No resolution zooming voodoo going on. When I look at the GUI display settings without even going into Admin mode, it has the primary/secondary displays correct too. I wouldn't be surprised if something is wrong with the Trident card itself, I would try another but it was the only PCI card out of the 4 I have on hand to work at all.

X should refuse to run if the second card is not detected I would think. Can you post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file? This should be able to tell if the card is detected and if I made any stupid errors in the section for it, the file is rather big so you probably have to put it into two posts.

Just looked through the log, and it appears that the Trident can't find any valid video modes.

That is telling you there is not enough memory for the 24bit colour at 1024x768 try changing to 16bit with something like this.

Code:

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen1"
        Device    "Card1"
        Monitor    "Monitor1"
        DefaultDepth 16
        SubSection "Display"
                Depth    16
                Modes    "1024x768"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Or even going with the 24bit but at 800x600 I pretty sure that a 1mb video card does both of those resolutions/colour depths combinations if not then try 16bit at 800x600.

Oh jeez I didn't even notice that it was 1MB. It looks like I'm gonna be stuck in 800x600x16, but IT WORKS! This is awesome, thanks.

[edit] Doh 800x600x16 doesn't work either, that's surprising. 1024x768x8 on the other hand does, so ugly it is until I can find a better card.
