gui root log in

friends
i have recently installed ubuntu 11.4

In the past [ unbuntu >10.4 ] I have been able to fashion it so that I could log in as root

by doing a
sudo passwd root
{ and giving root a password }

then editing
etc/x11/gdm/gdm.conf
and adding a linne of
Allowroot=true

but ubuntu 11.4 does not have a gdm dir
so - my Q is how do I fashion it such that I can log in to the x win as root.

thanks

You don't, use su or sudo for root tasks.

Kind regards

No point in logging in as root.

If you want to run a tool as root, while in X, you can use gksu for Gnome or kdesu for KDE...

If you want to login in GUI using root account to the system then you have to make the AllowRoot=true in the following file for Ubuntu 11.04:

/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

Also it is not advisable to use root account to login to GUI, you can just open up the terminal and us sudo applicaton_name and it will open up with super user access.

You're welcome.

I too like to live life on the edge but yeah when it comes to system I am bit obsessed about security. But yeah I agree that we should know how we can do that so that if someone asks us how to disable it we know where to look for.

I don't care if you bork your system because of running the GUI as root. It is your decision. But I care when you expose a machine to the net when running your GUI as root. Don't do this, you may harm (or at least annoy) other people. You can read my posts in this thread to see the dangers.

TobiSGD - i will read your posts....
i am sure that there may be dynamics that I -- am not aware of.

and there is this..
i did not have a dir /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

rather a sudo passwd root
{ and giving root a password }
and i could log in as root
WHICh-- i ahve done for years - WHICh i am going to review that practice.
( ya know .... it is almost a a form of lazyness on my part or ...coming from CentOS/RH i am used to being root ...anyways...)

i am glad we talked

thanks eVERYbodY
