Hi, I am a new user to Ubuntu server and would like to use a gui , not the command prompt. I installed ubuntu from the disk but every time I started the system but it starts loading and then goes to a blank screen, then the screen and keyboard turns off. so I tried installing gnome-care but when i start it with /etc/init.d/gdm start , it does the same thing. Home can i get it to work?

I am assuming that you definitely need the server version, and that the desktop version won't work for you? I have found that many people think they need the server release, when a simple desktop release will work and then you can just add what you need for whatever it is in particular that you are tyring to accomplish. I will do some research, but in the meantime, if you could let us know what exactly are your plans and what the end result is that you are seeking, maybe we can find an easier way to do this (with GUI) without having to do the 'server' version. Just a suggestion and trying to help and the more info we can get, the more likely we can get you a workable solution. I think so, but if the desktop would be better than I'll go for that one. I need the server as files server for a few hundred people, I am starting my own business to provide an internet connection and live video streams of 20 or so cameras, so i need the built in router of the server edition. Later on I would like it also to be used as a mail and web server. So what do I need to do, or get and where can i get it?

If that is the scope of what you are doing, file sharing for a few hundred people, then yes, you should stick with the server edition. I will look around and see if I can come up with some answers and see if some others will help us out here. I will say this, most of the admins using the servers do most of the work via the command line because of the resources that a GUI front-end can take up, so let me definitely try to get some assistance in here from someone with more server experience.
