Exclamation GTK installation problems

I tried installing GTK 2.8, but when I use
./configure
make
make install

when using the "make" command, I get
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

when using the "make install" command, I get
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.

I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a pretty good indication that the configuration failed to create a Makefile. Run configure again and post the errors you get.
