Gnome Logout dialog, shutdown and hibernate options have disappeared

Hi,
I just got a new (to me) Toshiba laptop and installed ubuntu on a 15GB partition, alongside Windows. I tested the hibernate after install, and it worked perfectly. After I hibernated, I installed the ndiswrapper-utils package and unlocked the root user. When I went to shut down the computer, I clicked "Desktop/Log out", and it simply gave me a confirmation dialog about logging out and saving my session. I found a suggestion about changing the settings in the session properties to turn on the "shutdown options", but nothing remotely like that exists in the session properties dialog.

try using apt to install the gnome-desktop metapackage if it isn't already installed.

gnome-desktop is installed. I am going to look at the gnome docs and see if I can find anything.
