GDM-Simple-Greeter.desktop

I installed a fresh copy of 9.1 today on a notebook. After the updates and first restart the simple greeter desktop came up with no options to type user names or passwords-. When I pressed the shutdown button a dialogue box gdm-simple-greeter.desktop not responding came up. I have been searching around the net and while there are several issues with Gnome and the above I have not found an answer as yet- any ideas?
I am starting a fresh install and will pay close attention to the updates this time.
thanks, Don

Update- I completed a fresh install checked the updates and all went well. Somehow the first install went wrong- I suspect that when I changed the desktop theme and turned off the visual effects Gnome became confused.

GDM-Simple-Greeter.desktop

I have a hang with a white box in the middle. When trying to shutdown by hitting the power off and select shutdown I see the message that GDM-Simple-Greeter.desktop is not responding. This happens everytime I restart the desktop. I am using 9.10 for months without problems and I am afraid that if I re-install linux I will lose all my data. Is there an other way to fix this? Any ideas? I'm desperate.

Thanks,

As per my previous post I fixed the problem with a fresh install- can you back up your data and do a fresh install. I still believe that this occurred on my PC when I changed the desktop theme.
