I can't get Gaim or Kopete to connect. When I first do an install, GAIM will not connect, Then I install Kopete, They both will connect until I reboot, then neither will connect. They'll stay that way forever until I get so damn frustrated I go back to XP pro!!!
I installed Kubuntu and it works perfectly, EXCEPT.... GAIM and Kopete will not connect to my various IM clients. It's weird. The internet is working fine and fast, obviously since I installed Firefox and am writing this using it.
Anyone know why these two mesanger programs won't work? BTW: THey didn't work when I installed Ubuntu either. Any help is appreciated.
Type "gaim" into a terminal and try to connect again and see if there are any error messages. If there are and you don't know what they mean, then post them here and we will see if we can help.
dennis@kubuntu:~$ gaim

The only thing I can think of is to un-install it and try to re-install and see what happens. All of the times that I have used either one of those apps, they have worked for me.
Maybe someone else has a better suggestion?
At a spanish lang forum (my native language), one guy said that he solve the problem changing the gnome locale to a ".ISO-8859-1" one (you know, because of those strange characters some people use on nicks). You should know better than me about an english international locale, may be something like en_EN.ISO-8859-1 to try with.
I've been fighting with this for over 2 weeks now. GAIM and Kopete will not connect. Everything else that connects to the internet works perfectly. I really want to use Linux more, but I have got to have GAIM and Citrix work or I cannot make a living.

A few months ago I was the same problem connecting Gaim and Kopete to MSN services.
The problem seems related to the password. If your password contains simbols (*, _ , ! and so on) change the password and try with one without simbols (only letters).
