Hello evereybody out there, a big 'hi' from norway!

I would like to share some thoughts here, concerning my experiences with linux distrubs. I got into linux simply because I once lived at a place where one just had (so they said) to have win xp to plug into the network (some 'VP-tunneling-client thing at the university'). And I wouldnt have to buy xp to reach the net! So I got into linux-xandros. Anyhow, now I'm into ubuntu breezy badger(couple of weeks), and this I must say; it looks great (some issues though)! I also have suse 10 on another pc, but I haven't been using that one since I installed ubuntu.

My main concern before (mandriva and suse) was the 'dependency hell' with rpms and .tar files and things like that, now with the apt-get commands this is really makes it a lot more easy (I have no interest in beeing a computer-engineer and 'tweak the hell' out of my pc). I want thing to work, with a little effort of course. MAny of my linux-problems have been solved due to this site and all the really good information I find here, thanks to you all! And I must say, it took me quite many hours just to find out how to install software, so I really understand those who consider going back to windows...but this shouldnt be neccesary. First of all, I dont like windows closed format (this is really a scary issue, I meen, think of all the documents (public and private) that are locked up to a format that are forced to use windows to be able to read...thats horrible). SEcond; what can we not do in linux? Play some fancy games?!

Anyhow, if my linux BREEZY BADGER works good, I 'll stick to it. But, for me its primarily a tool. I meen; If you had a car that forced you to configure it for half a hour to make a 10 min long trip, you would see thats kind of stupid, wouldnt you? THis is the case with some linux OS (in my opinion), but what the ****, people are different, some like to do a little (or maybe a lot) pc-tweaking.

Finally, I have one question, I cant see or reach my windows-xp partition in ubuntu (yes, I have still a dual boot, games you know...). Have seen the treads in this forum, but I couldnt figure it out. In suse 10 this is not a problem.

If you like apt-get, you can use just about any Debian-based distribution (including Xandros)--it doesn't have to be Ubuntu. In fact, from your little rant about cars and not wanting to spend time configuring stuff, I'd guess you'd probably like Mepis better than Ubuntu--it comes with proprietary codecs and automatically puts your partitions (ready for mounting with just a click) on the desktop.

Certain RPM-based distros also have apt and Synaptic. You may want to look into Blag or PCLinuxOS.
