Question Formating Seagate External HD

I have a new Seagate External HD FreeAgent Desk 500GB formatted NTFS

I would like to format it with FAT32

I have tried to format from a Windows 2000 Pro PC this didn't work, windows it could be formated!

I am now trying to format on a Ubuntu 9.10 computer and need to know which
format to use, as there is a bewildering array of options.

I will be using the HD to copy them transfer file to a new iMac later this year. (Note yet purchased)

EG. from Mac OS X to W95 FAT32 (LBA) (0x0c) etc

Thank you

Sorry I am new to Ubuntu and Linux

What does gparted mean and would it be used in terminal?

Also how will I know that I have selected the External Drive to format?

gparted is a live cd .
You can down load it burn as a iso file
But it in CD or DVD drive restart you're computer.
You can format HD shrink partitions and so om with it
It is something like partition magic in windows

On my system ('buntu 8.04) gparted is a command.

Open a terminal.

Type sudo gparted

Give your password when asked.

A GUI opens which lets you see (and alter, and format) the partitions on your attached disks.

Be VERY careful about which disks / partitions you format!
