Font rendering in Kubuntu and Ubuntu

Can anyone tell me why the fonts in kubuntu are so choppy looking and rendered so terribly. The thing is I have ubuntu installed and I decided to install kubuntu desktop along with it. The fonts look fine that way, but I'm talking about installing the kubuntu cd by itself without ubuntu. This is apparent in a lot of distros. Is it my resolution setting, graphics card or something else. I have a NVidia graphics card if that makes a difference.
