I have had some wierd problems with firefox and ubuntu. Such as, aftrer installing an extension firefox will not start unless a logout occurs. Maybe try to logout and log back in.

How are you installing firefox? Apt-get or a .tar? Apt-get should install everything in the proper manner.

Well, that is apt-get with a gui. Everything should work fine. Can you launch the application from a terminal? MAybe your launcher button is just broken.

Could you launch the program via a terminal? If so then you will need to delete your old launcher button and create a new one. Basically, all you need to do is create a new button.

Try renaming your .mozilla directory in your home folder.

Code:
mv ~/.mozilla ~/oldmozilla
If that works, close Firefox and copy your bookmarks/history/settings back,

Code:
cp -Rf ~/oldmozilla/firefox/* ~/.mozilla/firefox
