Firefox bookmarks.html not showing correct bookmarks even though file is identical.
I have a bookmarks.html that was created with 2.x and with ubuntu 8.04 running a beta of Firefox 3 for whatever reason I can't get the bookmarks.html file to run in ff. Whenever FF 3 starts it's using the default bookmarks.html even though it's not the one in my profile. I don't understand where it's loading it from. It's definitely ~.mozilla/firefox though.
Has anyone else experienced this? I just want my bookmarks back! ahh

Bookmarks for firefox are in ~.mozilla/firefox/"random-code".default/bookmarks.html
and can usually be replaced with any backup you may have from another firefox.
Are you sure that the format of bookmarks.html hasn't changed from FF2 to FF3? Because the bookmarking system certainly has.
On that note, organizing bookmarks in FF3 (beta 5) seems to be horribly screwed up, sometimes they just disappear on their own, and you can't even drag and drop to reorganize them. I guess it wouldn't be a proper Ubuntu release though without a few major bugs...

I have firefox2 and firefox-3b2 on Mandriva-2007 and they are both using the same
directory and bookmarks.
(.mozilla/firefox/m4i6zh8h.default/bookmarks.html)
(.mozilla/firefox/m4i6zh8h.default/bookmarks.postplaces.html)
Firefox-3b2 was compiled on Mandriva january 9'
An Ubuntu 8.04 package might be different. (Have only Ubuntu 7.10...on a spare disk)
I am running OpenSuSe 11 and I am having the same problem. The bookmark backup folder, bookmarkbackups, captures the changes, though. The problem is that the backup files are not HTML format! I will continue to look for a solution.

. . . response from Mozilla forums, thanks to cor-el
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in places.sqlite and no longer creates a HTML backup by default.
You can export the bookmarks in Firefox to a HTML file: Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Export HTML
If you want Firefox 3 to create an automatic html backup when you exit Firefox then you can set the pref browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true on the about:config page.
You can also create a JSON backup:
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Backup
