firefox 2

Hi
I've just spent 30 minutes trying to get Firefox 2 to install on 6.06, to no avail.

It really shouldn't be that hard/messy.

I can't get the realplayer plugin to work either.

Time to flip back to the safety of Mandriva I think.

Is there a quick and painless way to do this?

Why not try Ubuntu 6.10. It comes with Firefox 2 and my upgrade from 6.06 went smoothly using the recommended Ubuntu method of a single command gksu "update-manager -c -d"

Before I clean installed edgy, what I did was really simple. Untar the firefox folder into your home then create a symlink to the plugins and that's it. I also changed the default browser to /home/username/firefox/firefox instead of just firefox.

You can also untar the download from Mozilla into /usr/local (need's sudo). Then do the following:
Code:
sudo mv /usr/bin/firefox /usr/bin/firefox1.5
sudo ln -s /usr/local/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
Then create symbolic links to the plugins in /usr/local/firefox/plugins, and you are good to go.

The advantage of this is that Firefox 2 is available to all users on your system.

I hope this helps

This script will install Firefox 2.0 for you and integrate with your /usr/lib/firefox/plugins folder:

Hey
thanks for the help, the script that aysiu suggested worked a treat, though the "please enter locale" question could have been a little clearer (like "please enter local number from above list". However I thought it was neat the way it downloaded the code and unzipped it etc.

I've got both hexplayer and realplayer applications installed on my machine but I still can't get firefox to use them (this is really important to me so I can read the new and listen to the radion on www.bbc.co.uk).
(get "could find appropriate hxplay or realplayer application in system path")
