Error reading Release file

Hi all. Hate to bother you, but I've come up empty on this one.

I've been burning iso's with no problems using k3b on an xubuntu
install for months, but lately any install cd (or dvd) I burn gets
to the same place in the installation and spits out the same error:

[!!] Configuring cdrom-checker-menu

Error reading Release file

The CD-ROM does not seem to contain a valid 'Release' file, or that
file could not be read correctly.

I've checked the md5sums of both the iso and cd, tried different
media, used slower burn speeds, tried using wodim instead of k3b,
tried appending ide=nodma, and of course Googled with all my might
all to no avail. Is there anything I might have missed?

Any help would be stored treasure in Heaven.

Odd. Are these all installs of the same thing? If so, maybe the source image is bad.

Actually no. One was Ubuntu studio and the other was ubuntu server. I was able to burn a data dvd and a bootable knoppis cd.
