Error loading operating system

I partitioned a 10gig space for ubuntu on my hard drive, ncluding the swap partition thing that was recommended. Now first problem is the ubuntu 7.10 CD i have isnt loading on when i go to install it, the screen is freezing up. But the thing im most worried about is that if i try to just go to winXP I get an error cannot load operating system.

What can I do??

Did you run ubuntu just from the Live CD first of all to make sure everything was working before you partitioned the hard drive?

I've burned ubuntu isos from time to time that don't load properly so when you're trying a distro of any kind it's sensible to give it a trial run first.

I'm not sure what level of experience you have, but I wonder if this was your first attempt to install Linux.

As for the XP issue, it's probably been affected by the re-partitioning. I hope that some more knowledgeable members can advise you how to sort it out.

As for ubuntu, did you change the BIOS settings to make sure the machine can boot from a CD?

Please let us know how it works out.

The rebuild might be the problem.

Try booting from the Feisty (7.04) Live CD. If it worked before, it will work now.

If that doesn't work, let us know what the rebuild involved. Did you update the CD/DVD drive etc... When you say the Live CD won't even start up, do you mean that you don't hear the drive spinning and that the LED doesn't come on?

It might be something as simple as an unconnected cable or a wee change to the BIOS boot settings.

Let us know how you get on and we'll do our best to get you restarted.

The rebuild consisted of

--Video Card--
XFX PVT71PUDP3 GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16

--CPU--
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Processor

--Mobo--
ABIT AN-M2 nView AM2 NVIDIA Geforce 7025/NF630a Micro ATX

--RAM--
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

When i used Feisty (7.04) Live CD, it was on the older system. Neither Live CD's work on this new build. When i say work this is what happens... The PC boots from CD, starts the loading bar and logo of UBUNTU, then the image freezes completely and eventually goes to a black screen with a flashing "_" at the top left corner. It never changes from that screen.

josh@nsgrounds.com, apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

That's a pretty major rebuild. Normally, I replace one component at a time and see what's happening. If everything's ok, then I move on to the next step.

There are probably too many permutations to work things out in your case.

The problem with XP is that it'll stop working if you replace too many things at one time because Microsoft has a sort-of "three strikes and you're out" policy. When you change the motherboard alone you're entering difficult territory because that changes too many things for XP to accept.

Assuming everything is cabled correctly, a fresh ubuntu install should be OK. But DON'T do it yet. I'd suggest that you try a few other Linux live-CDs on your system to see if you can get to a desktop without installing.

If you can get to a desktop, then you can pull off the important stuff from your XP install to a USB memory stick and keep it safe.

You could try Knoppix, PCLinuxOS or Puppy Linux to do this. Burn the images on another PC if you have one or use a friend's box if you haven't and then try them in your own machine.

Let me know how you get on and I promise I'll check this thread in the next few days so's I can reply.

If you can get any sort of a desktop - but DON'T install anything yet - you should be OK and then you can reinstall XP.

The worst case scenario - unfortunately - is that the initial partitioning before you installed ubuntu has done bad stuff to the XP partition...but I think you've probably just upgraded the machine more than Windows likes.
