error installing from Ubuntu repositories

I'm having difficulty with a new install on my sister-in-laws PC. She's Vietnamese, so I'm setting it up in that language with the Vietnamese keyboard mapping. It's challenging because I don't speak the language and must use on-line translators on another PC and memory of what is what while I'm doing things. Mostly it's been successful, but now, no matter what I attempt to install from the repositories, I'm getting a big red exclamation mark and an error message. The installation is 64-bit Ubuntu 10.10. I got the 64-bit Flash (Alpha) installed in Firefox without a hitch after unpacking the TAR file on another machine. For some reason hers wouldn't unpack it. Using the terminal, I installed lame, unrar and Asunder without problems early in the game. But now I can't get Gnome Player, Alien Arena, Aqualung or anything else to take without seeing the error message.

Now that's what I call a challenge! :-)

Only suggestion I have is, switch to English during installation, then when you're finished switch back to Vietnamese. (You can easily switch on-the-fly.)

I would recommend what pingu says.
The issue may be that not all the available programs have Vietnamese translation. So, part of your system will be English, part - Vietnamese. Still workable, but depends on level of your S-i-l knowledge of English.
