Enabling wireless (Kubuntu)
 

Hi,

I'm running Kubuntu Hoary on a Gateway 450 ROG laptop, and trying to set up wireless. When I run KWiFiManager, it shows that it is connected to a network which I know exists, but there is a "?" over the picture of the wireless card on the right side, and no internet connections work. When I go into Control Center to try to enable my wireless card on eth1, I cannot enter administrator mode. After I enter my password, it dumps me back at the "Internet and Network" screen, and when I try to enter the Network Settings screen, it's still in regular user mode. When I try to use "sudo ifup eth1" form the konsole, I get "Ignoring unknown interface eth1=eth1". Here's the output of iwconfig:

I have worked with two network cards before, but you just have to get the settings right, and they would be in the network options or in the directories..

I apparently can't turn on the radio, so that could be it. I try to type "iwconfig eth1 txpower on" but I get the following:

Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.

any ideas?

How big is your wireless network going to be? I am going to make one soon, but harder then it looks to start...

this is actually an easy fix(in ubuntu) open up the "networking" tool, its gui based... but it'll have a list of all the internet related junk ya got, like eth0 if you got ethernet, wlan0 for wireless and ppp0 for dialup.

just simply select one and click activate(you'd think this'd be harder but it really isnt)

anyway, should that not work properly you can change the settings in there, like using dhcp, setting static ips and junk, but when i got stuck where you were regarding my wi-fi, that totally fixed the problem.

I had a similar problem on my Toshiba Tecra 8200.
I can't remember exactly how I fixed it :(, but if I recall correctly I think I started the KDE Wifi tool from the console (possibly using sudo), and this got me into administrator mode in the control centre, where I was able to enable my eth1 wireless card.
Also, I think I disabled eth0 first.

Sorry if this is a bit vague, but it was a while ago when I did it, and I don't have my linux machine handy to remind myself of the process.
