EDUBUNTU Terminal Server (Timely Question)

my kid's school has 10-15 pretty worthless windows 98 boxes. they are sloooooow.

i'd like to set up an edubuntu terminal server and use these boxes as thin clients.

i'm looking at a dell poweredge lt05 dual core opteron 1212 (2 ghz) with 2 gb ram.

is this enough horsepower to run 10-15 clients using gcompris style learning apps simultaneously?

i need to know within 3 hours b/c dell's special pricing ends then.

also, it has one nick and this network is isolated from the net - so i'm okay for now. can i just add another nick if they decide to connect the server to the net? how can i get updates given that this network is currently not connected to the net.

tia for the help. i'm trying to do my part to get the linux / ubuntu word out there into the mind of people who aren't familiar with its potential.

Please post your further experience. I have a similar situation & would love to know how it turns out for you -- especially the loading.

1 Q: Can you add more RAM?

I compliment for not using the word "urgent", even though yours is the 1st urgent Q I have seen here at LQ. I'm sure you know that the world-wide nature of LQ makes getting an answer w/in 3 hrs a roll of the dice.

Good Luck.

arch,

the dell poweredge t105 dual core opteron i purchased i selling for $249 (I actually got a 2.0 GHz cpu for $50 more). that seems like a heckuva deal considering i paid well over $100 more less than a month ago.

be sure to select the free sata dvd if you decide to go this route.

i just got my 3 com switch from lanstreet.com.

i'm ordering cables today and hope to get this set up in about a week or so.

i'll definitely let you know how it goes. initially, these systems will not be set up with internet access.

i hope i don't run into trouble connecting and configuring clients. we shall see...
