hi,

i have started a thread on the ubuntu forum here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1545466 that describes the problem using their sticky thread on how to get multimedia going.

this is the sticky thread howto for enabling multimedia http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or

Hi -

I did a "Google" on the error message, and came up with this Sun bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/sun-java/+bug/104512

with this Ubuntu 10.x solution:

enable the "partner" repository in SYstem -> Administration -> SOftware SOurces

http://groups.google.com/group/ec2ub...331c76c1df90dc

'Hope that helps .. PSM

thank you paulsm4.

i had installed 9.10 first because it offered an oem install option. i have worked around the problem by changing Software Sources>Other Software>http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu to "lucid" in the Distribution field using the Edit feature in the Software Sources dialog after selecting the "partner" repository as previously advised.

previously the distribution field contained "karmic" perhaps this was some artifact from the upgrade that was not handled properly?

thank you for your help.
