DVD playback problem (not about Non-Free codecs)

Hello,

I have installed Ubuntu on my two computers in the last few weeks. My laptop is playing DVDs no problem but my desktop is giving me this error:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.

I did the exact same install on both systems and used Automatix to install all the Non-Free DVD support and other multimedia codecs.

Can anyone help me? I have been trying to figure this out all day and have made no progress. It is pretty key to me that I be able to watch DVDs on this desktop. Thanks.

hello :-)
i could never get my totem to play *anything*, all it says no codec for such video format (my /usr/lib/codec is full of codec you can think of), where as Xine/mplayer are doing just great.
go here http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/allpackages and download xine (make sure you also download the dependencies). now play with xine and be happy.

I am using totem-xine and mplayer-xine.

hello :-)
did you select the video output device from mplayer Preferences? if not, then run gmplayer, and in preferences box select "xvid" as your video output device. this should rectify the problem.
