Dualboot [HD1: Ubuntu14.04] / [HD2: Win7(truecrypted) ]

Hi everyone

I trying to get my dual boot config to work, I'm running into problems with truecrypt.

Quote:
I've been folling this guide:
https://forums.kali.org/showthread.p...ecrypt-windows
My config:

HD1: Ubuntu 14.04 = Primary boot disk
HD: Windows7 (Entire drive is truecrypted)

I've copyied the Truecrypt rescue disk.iso from win7Drive to UbuntuDrive /boot/truecrypt.iso

And:
sudo cp /usr/lib/syslinux/memdisk /boot

After that I'm trying to edit:
$ sudo gedit /etc/grub.d/40_custom

PHP Code:
menuentry "windows7" {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root
='(hd1,1)'
linux16 (hd0,1)/memdisk iso raw
initrd16
(hd0,1)/truecrypt.iso

$ sudo update-grub
[reboot]

I want UbuntuHD to boot as primary, and when GRUB boot menu appears be able to either continue boot Ubuntu or boot Windows7 on that drive. If I follow the steps described above and boot (primary) on UbuntuHD, I get the GRUB menu and can choose to boot Windows7, and then the truecrypt bootloader prompt shows up and can type in my password, but then I get an error message that the password is incorrent.

If I reboot the computer with Win7Drive as primary it works fine and dandy: truecrypt bootloader prompt + password works and starts up normal as always. So nothing has affected the password/Win7 drive in any way.

Is there anyone out there who has any experience or an idea to get this to work? the truecrypt issue is whats givning me h*ll.

I've asked in two other forums (swedish) but none of them had any solution.

The only logical conclusion I can draw from this story is that there is a problem with your truecrypt rescue.iso

To verify that, I'd burn the rescue iso to an actual CD and boot from that. If you get the same error: confirmed, it's a problem with your rescue iso and has nothing to do with linux or grub. Remake the rescue and verify it works the way it was originally designed to.

If you have no CD drive, you can probably use something like rufus to make a bootable USB drive from the CD iso.

If on the other hand, it works properly from an actual CD but not from grub as you have described, then either there's something off with the version of syslinux or I'm stumped.

I don't want to mess up my computer so I'm doing everything in virtualbox, if success - the plan was to do a dual boot config on my real computer.

About the password incorrent issue, I read somewhere, that other people had the exakt same problem, so the probability that the truecrypt.iso is corrupt is extremly low, plus that I've duplicated everything twice and get the same result. The solution was to choose F8 (Repair options) in truecrypt promt, and then --> Restore volume header

[re-boot after that]

After that truecrypt accepted my password, but gave me error message "no bootable partition found"
I dont get all all why I had to restore volyme header, however it then accepted the password.
The only conclusion I have is that truecrypt is looking for Windows7 partition in the wrong place (partitions)

Does anyone have an idea what the correct partion would be?

Hmm, well you could have booted off a cd iso physical or virtual, from a virtual machine, but OK.

The problem with using partition modifications in virtual box, and I suspect that is true of truecrypt restoring volume header as well, is that it might not work the same as it does on physical hardware. Too many things not originally designed to work together....

In case you don't get this working, you could consider keeping your virtual machine instead of dual booting and relying on the host (Ubuntu) for encrypting the data of the VM, or you could use Windows encryption eg bitlocker. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
