Downloading Codecs for Hoary Hedgehog

I basically would like to know (step-by-step in n00bie language) how to go about downloading codecs for Ubuntu's H.H. that I just installed a few days ago. I suppose that I just need to find .mov, .api, .mp3, and a few others.

Thank you.

If you want to play movies, go for MPlayer.

Use sudo apt-get install mplayer

To download codecs use sudo apt-get install w32codecs

Codecs have always been a pain in the butt. Usually I have used the Mallirat deb repositories, but the Ubuntu folks have made it MUCH easier!
Check this out: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats
All you have to do is:
-open synaptic
-Go to the repositories menu item
-Add new
-Choose "custom"
-and paste this line (current as of 9/21/2005): deb http://ubuntu-backports.mirrormax.net/ hoary-extras main universe multiverse restricted
-Then reload package info (it should do this automatically if you have a high speed connection)
-Finally searc synaptic for a package called lame. This is a pretty good mp3 codec library. There are others as well. Search for mp3 in "Name and Description"
-Install and you're off and running.

Note: last night (9/20/2005) I had an issue with the mirror being down, but it worked fine this morning.

-HD

it seems to be down right now, but go to www.ubuntuguide.org. In the index look for codecs/dvd/audio&video and it will walk you through the whole process.

The site is down, but its mirror is up.

Follow these directions:

Then, follow these:

I would recommend Kubuntu, then, instead of Ubuntu, as the unofficial Kubuntu guide has this caveat at the beginning: Content is adapted and mostly tested on a Kubuntu Linux 5.04 for amd64, which should be equally valid also for i386. You're the target audience!
