Downgrading to 10.10

have a nvidia 96x graphic card. and I was wondring that If I Upgrade to 11.04 and my display some how crashes in the 11.04, can I still downgrade to my 10.10 installation.(I have quite a large amount of data on my HDD,and I have a small10gb partition where XP resides).

Regards

Downgrading is not an option. If you want to revert back to your old system you have to make a system-backup before doing the upgrade.

Check this thread / post for an explanation.

Downgrading may seem like a convenient solution but it is no more than that. As https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases shows maintenance for Ubuntu 10.10 is set to end in April 2012. Past that date you will not be able to receive security, bug or performance fixes. It seems to me some choice-making is in order.

If you are installed on 2 partitions you can create another / partition for 11.04 and use the same /home partition. You MUST use a different user name for the 11.04 install. Then if it doesn't work it is no problem to simply delete the new partition.

If it does work you can just go on using 11.04.

Next time you want to upgrade use the 10.10 partition with the same user name that 10.10 is using now.

for a old gforce card that uses the 96 driver
the current xorg is incompatible and the nouveau driver WILL NOT work on that card for ubuntu11 or opensuse 11.4 or 12 ,nor fedora 15 or 16 .

CebtOS 6.2 or ScientificLiunux 6.1 will run just fine using the nouveau driver
you WILL NOT be able to use the 96 nvidia.run
it WILL NOT run on the xorg that is in cent 6

the nvidia.run WILL RUN on the older CentOS 5

it is unknown to me but Debain stable might run fine with the nouveau driver
but i am a red hat person so....

now it might be possible to hack the system and downgrade ONLY x11 , i have done that in the past on fedora
but it is a pain in the "Bleep" to do

so look into using a os that can still work on 10 to 13 year old hardware
PS. the new os's do not even look for a 3.5 floppy drive

Debian lists some packages for the 96xx whether it will run or not is another matter. They also list some specific Nouveau packages
