does ubuntu burn cpus?
 

hi, i'm trying to install ubuntu 7.04 for amd64, i use the text installation not the livecd, the cd loads, press enter on install, the installation almost begins and then i get an error message that my cpu is running with 85°C and the system shuts down. I don't know if this temperature is real, windows works with 25°C and the fan always works, but i have noticed when turning the pc on that now it makes like a "click" sound or something. I have an athlon64 3000+ core orleans socket am2 cpu on a MSI K9NGM motherboard. If this thing burns my pc i'm suing the ubuntu community, oh wait i can't, i guess open source isn't so great after all. sorry but this has been a great disapointment.

Nope. There's no way the Ubuntu CD is causing processor over-heating on your system.

Turn off your temperature monitoring in your BIOS settings. You can turn it back on after Ubuntu installs.

yes, if you read the name of the thread you can find it. and the rest is the explanation of my problem, so that you could help me. i'm sorry if you are offended by what i wrote, but that is not my problem, it isn't an insult to anybody, and in my experience linux distributions have had serious compatibility issues and that really is pushing away potential users. I thought it could cause my hardware to "burn", if that is bs or not serious enough to you i can't imagine how you interpret other lesser problems.

anyway, thanks for the replys, i thought the linux kernel or something could have some effect on the functions of my hardware, could you confirm that it doesn't? i will try again without T monitoring, i hope nothing happens. :cool:

I've run many different Linux distros on many different hardware platforms. NEVER had a problem with overheating or a fan being disabled at any time.

Its not Linux or a Linux distro doing what you may be seeing. By the way, what app is showing your CPU temp during install?

i don't know, the ubuntu installation showed a bunch of messages and then it shuts down. but now i installed version 6.06 lts and everything is fine, guess i will stick with that. but now i can't connect to the internet, will i figure this out? to be continued in another thread... :scratch:, i believe in you freakin' open source... stuff

From what you've discribed it seems that you may have a h/w issue. I'd suggest accessing the bios on boot-up and checking the voltage of the power supply, [this feature is typical with the later bios utilities]. The 5 & 12vdc should be within +/- 10%. If the voltage is higher than spec, the cpu will run hotter.
Also the bios should display actual cpu temp and the fan rpm. Over-clocking may be enabled, which would also cause an over-heat condition.
