Display goes to sleep on boot - won't wake up without X!

My GeForce 7300 GS recently died, and I upgraded to a GeForce 8400 GS. Since then, my display has been going to sleep right after the GRUB boot-loader screen, and won't come back on until the X server starts.

This wouldn't be too large of a problem for me, except that I'm trying to re-install my operating system, and the screen won't wake back up for UbuntuStudio's text-based installer.

Does anyone know why this is happening or how to fix it?

I had a similar problem with a 8600 GT. I was installing Ubuntu 7.10 and i selected the normal GUI install. It gave me just a black screen. I think the install was running behind that but I can't be sure. I selected the safe GUI boot and it seemed to work fine after me.
