Disabling Kernel Updates in Ubuntu 8.10

I have a custom kernel I compiled so my hardware would all work properly under Ubuntu 8.10

That being said I was wondering if there is a way to disable it telling me I need to update my Kernel in the updates section just because my 2.6.27-11-generic is different from the one they have. For now I have just been unselecting it when I update everything else but I know myself and one day I will forgot to uncheck it and then I will be recompiling my kernel again lol.

Anyone know how I can stop kernel updates?

AFAIK, there's no way to stop the update from appearing in Update Manager. Kernel updates are considered important security updates. However, newer Kernels often include new drivers as well, so you may actually find that a Kernel update will work with your hardware 'as is'. If not, you can press ESC when you see "Grub loading..." at startup and select your Kernel from the menu, then edit the Grub menu.lst file to remove the newer Kernel from the boot options.

Actually, you can stop kernel updates, (unless they've changed it since 8.04)

Just go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.
Use search to find the name of those updates that are listed in the update manager.
Highlight them (all at once is faster, but separately will work, too), and choose Package > Lock Version on the menu bar.

Voila. You will never be asked again to update those items. Unless, of course, you find them again in Synaptic and unlock them.
