Desktop frozen

I usually use Fedora. Last night, I installed Ubuntu 8.40.1 Desktop. I got it updated without any errors. Now, I have two issues I can't figure out how to fix.

1. When I first installed, Ubuntu had the desktop resolution at 1600xsomething. I lowered it to 1280x1024 and everything worked fine. The updates completed and it said it needed to restart. So I shut off the system and went to bed.

Today, I started it back up and the Desktop resolution was at 800x600 and won't allow me to raise it above that.

2. I went to flip through the screensavers to see what Ubuntu had. I previewed the one called "Molecule" and the screen is basically frozen except for the mouse. I can only assume it's a video driver issue. But I can't get another terminal to investigate.

I tried using <ctrl>+<alt>+<Fkeys> and nothing happens. It acts completely frozen except that the mouse can move around - just not interact with anything. There is no telnet or ssh server running on the machine.

Anybody got any ideas?

Nvidia, ATI ???.
If you select recovery mode at the boot prompt, you'll come up in single user (non-GUI) mode. Will allow you to have a look at xorg.conf.

It's an old machine, but as I recall it's an old ATI 9200. This is very strange. I should still be able to get another terminal.

I finally decided to hit the reset switch and it boots fine - with my 1280x1024 resolution, but when I try to change the screen saver, it just freezes up again.
