Default Ubuntu boot location

Hi all. I've recently installed Ubuntu 7.04 on an external hard-disk for occasional use.

The first thing I noticed when I booted was that the Grub boot loader came up with "Error 17". I went back and edited the boot from (hd1,1) to (hd0,1). It worked fine. So once ubuntu was loaded, I edited menu.lst using gedit.

I updated linux kernel and again, the grub boot loader was set to (hd1,1). I found that when I resume from suspend or hibernate, It tries to find (hd1,1) not (hd0,1).

So I realised that somewhere, (hd1,1) was set as the ubuntu location. Where/how can I edit this?

Just some info:
I'm running on an HP Pavillion.
Grub is installed on the same harddisk as Ubuntu (mbr).
When I boot, I escape into a menu which provides me 3 boot options. "CD, Harddisk, USB Harddisk". I select Harddisk, which then loads GRUB from there.

I'm new to Ubuntu and Linux. Any help would be great!

Thanks.

Check out this link:

It is a GUI for editing GRUB. I have found it very useful in editing GRUB on ubuntu machines.

Hope this helps you out.

I think Grub is just to boot up the computer and not resume from suspend or hibernate. Correct me if I'm wrong. I have no trouble editting the menu.lst for grub.
