default runlevel 2 ?

im new in Linux, i started reading some books and learning, and so far all i have read is that runlevel 5, is where X server and the most services are up, 6 reboot, 0 halt, 1, 2 , 3 without X, and with some services growing depending the runlevel..

But now, i got confused.. my Kubuntu 5.10 has its default runlevel in 2.. eeven when it s always going to the X..

Can anybody help me understand this little weird thing. ?

Hello!

Your Runlevel description is correct. Runlevel 5 is multiuser and X-Windows system.

Runlevel 2 is without X and Network.

Behaviour of Ubuntu in this case is not correct.

what i think ubuntu is doing is going into runlevel 2 and then running a login manager as a daemon. i have seen other distros do this as well. it would be the same as you booting to a command line and typing startx

AFAIK the only runlevels really defined are 0,1 & 6. 2-5 are just defined as multiuser but can be any function (i.e. GUI). Redhat adpoted a pseudo standard of
0 - Halt the system
1 - Single-user mode
2 - Multi-user mode (without NFS)
3 - Multi-user mode
5 - Multi-user mode, graphical login
6 - Reboot the system

and some distros followed suite. Some distros like Debian which Kubuntu is based on uses 2 for its default runlevel.
