Some things work ... Some things don't. The only way to really have Debian is to install Debian.

Why do you want to use the Debian repos instead of the Ubuntu ones?

Cool. - In example, Ubuntu have patched and tweaked OpenOffice, to better fit into their distribution. - Would you actually recommend to use the Debian version of OpenOffice, instead?

And, of course, why should the original questioner should want to use Debian's version of OpenOffice over Ubuntu's?

Questions over questions -- let's wait for the original poster to become more specific...

You should only consider using a non-Ubuntu package if it isn't in the Ubuntu repositories. Search them using Synaptic and remember to enable the "universe" and "mutiverse" repositories to get access to the widest range of Ubuntu tailored applications.

I've had success with some Debian packages in Ubuntu, while others have failed miserably. Certain individual .deb-packaged programmes do in fact work just fine, but I'd stay away from repos that aren't desgined for Ubuntu. Synaptic will happily let you add the repos & install packages from them, but the differences between Debian and Ubuntu are just enough that to rely on non-Ubuntu repos could be very hazardous to your installation.
