Dapper on IMAC G3 - fails with RAMDISK error

I am trying to install ubuntu linux on an old iMac G3. The install fails with the following:

RAMDISK: incomplete write (-28 !=32768) 8388608
RAMDISK: ran out of compressed data
invalid compressed format (err=1)
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to moutn root fs on unknown-bluck(1,0)
<0>Rebooting in 180 seconds..

I have tried this with both the Ubuntu 6.06-desktop-powerpc and the Ubuntu 6.06 alternate-desktop-powerpc images. Can anyone give me some direction on how to resolve this?
