Dapper/Compiz/XGL problem

Hey everybody,
I'm today's newest convert to linux!
I've been trying to make the switch for a while but could never get things to work right until I found ubuntu.

I've heard many good things about compiz/xgl and decided to try it out so i installed drivers for my nvidia fx5600 and installed compiz/xgl folling the steps at the link below and it appeared I had everything installed correctly, but when I try to run it I get these errors:

$ thefuture
gnome-window-decorator, Failed to load shadow images
area@black-box:~$ compiz.real: No composite extension

I've searched these forums and a few other spots online to no avail.
Has anyone had these problems or have any suggestions?

Composite extension is probably not loaded. Try gaining root privileges and then editing your /etc/X11/xorg.conf; to the very bottom of the file, add the following:

Section "Extensions"
          Option  "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

Save, close the file and restart your X (ctrl+alt+backspace).
